Acting for the blue planet

“World Oceans Day”

Since 2005, La Rochelle Aquarium has taken part in World Oceans Day on 8th June, organised by the members of the World Ocean Network.
During this event, La Rochelle Aquarium raises the awareness of several hundred children and adults to the importance and need to protect the oceans and marine environment.
Every year, the Aquarium and French association Espace de Culture Océane du Littoral et de l’Environnement (Coast, Environment and Ocean Culture Centre/ECOLE) put on free workshops for school pupils with a fun take on learning, as well as a meeting with professionals and scientists for the general public so as to discuss the challenges of this protection together.
They bring together countless local associations to run this event, including the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (Bird Protection League/LPO), Nature Environnement 17 and Les Petits Débrouillards, not to mention local businesses which, like the Aquarium, take environmentally friendly action: Léa Nature, l’Imprimerie Rochelaise, and Crédit Agricole Charente-Maritime-Deux-Sèvres.
Since 2005, 1,830 “citizen of the Ocean” passports have been handed out – with World Oceans Day getting more and more people involved in La Rochelle as each year passes.

“La Mer n’est pas une poubelle” (The Sea is not a dustbin)

For 15 years, the Aquarium has been committed to protecting the marine environment through the campaign “La mer n’est pas une poubelle”. Originally sponsored by Isabelle Autissier and Nicolas Hulot, this campaign sought to remind the public at large of the importance of respecting the ocean and environment.
This initiative has since expanded nationwide with Nicolas Hulot and “SOS Mer Propre” (SOS Clean Sea).

For its part, the Aquarium has taken a wide range of measures:

November 2003: the Aquarium gathers 13,000 signatures by inviting its visitors to sign the petition against the Prestige oil spill.

May 2003: the Aquarium gets more than 100 youngsters donning a “la mer n’est pas une poubelle” t-shirt for a UNSS Voile challenge on the sea in La Rochelle.

April 2003: the Aquarium pays for 48 works of art painted by pupils from an infants’ school in La Rochelle that are put up on the 45 pontoons of the Port des Minimes.
