Cuban Royal Palm

Roystonea regia

Presentation

This palm has leaves measuring 3 metres long, divided into many leaflets that sway in the wind. At the base, the trunk is grey and often bulging. Like many members of its family, this palm tree bears separate male and female flowers. They produce black fruit 1 cm in diameter that are edible at maturity.

This palm is very important to its natural environment, because parrots and tree frogs use it as a perch. Its fruit and pollen are enjoyed by many species of bats, birds and bees.

The botanical description of this palm tree was made possible by the samples collected by the scientists Humboldt and Bonpland. The second of the two was a naturalist from La Rochelle.
