Dream and Understand the sea

About the Aquarium

Born from a family passion for the underwater world, La Rochelle Aquarium is one of the largest privately owned aquariums in Europe, founded in 1970 by René Coutant.

His children, Roselyne and Pascal, carried forward their father’s vision by building a true institution with a unique balance: the 800,000 visitors welcomed each year help fund numerous scientific research programs and support public awareness initiatives for the preservation of biodiversity.

Today, the third generation, represented by Ambre and Mathieu, is committed to maintaining the Aquarium as a center of excellence, ready to face the environmental challenges of the 21st century.

A journey into the heart of the Ocean

While the Ocean covers 70% of the Earth’s surface, La Rochelle Aquarium rises to the challenge of revealing the world’s marine depths in just two hours. Encounter more than 12,000 marine animals and be amazed by the biodiversity of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Tropics.

Like an artist, nature unveils its masterpieces. Colors, shapes, and textures blend endlessly. With every visit, discover the ever-changing nature of one of the 84 ecosystems.

A true Center for the Study and Preservation of Marine Species, the Aquarium is also a place of research, education, and conservation, dedicated to better understanding and protecting marine biodiversity.

In 3 million litres of seawater, home to everything from fragile jellyfish to fascinating sharks, you can embark on a unique journey to dream and learn about the sea.
