Protecting the environment and reducing our ecological footprint are part of the Aquarium La Rochelle’s daily commitments. This approach has been recognized through the NF Environnement Sites de visite certification, awarded by AFNOR Certification to cultural and tourist attractions that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable development.

Faithful to its mission of “Inspiring wonder and understanding of the ocean to better protect it,” Aquarium La Rochelle has been raising awareness of the richness and fragility of marine ecosystems for more than 60 years. This certification acknowledges its long-standing commitment to ocean conservation and responsible tourism.

Renewable Energy Solutions

The Aquarium has been equipped with large solar panels for over 20 years. The installation generates enough renewable energy to cover the equivalent electricity needs of five four-person households.

To further reduce the building’s energy consumption, the site has upgraded its heat pumps with more efficient systems using a low-toxicity refrigerant that has no impact on the ozone layer.

Sustainable Stationery

The Aquarium uses Imprim’ Vert-certified printers for its communication materials, to promote sustainable forest management. All printing is carried out on PEFC-certified paper from sustainably managed forests. Special attention is also paid to the office paper used internally, by selecting paper with the European Ecolabel label.

Water Conservation

Water consumption is optimized through controlled-flow taps, showers, and sanitary facilities. In the tropical greenhouse, part of the irrigation water comes from rainwater harvesting. An automated irrigation system ensures precise watering, while water-retaining materials in the soil help reduce waste and conserve this valuable resource.
