Golden Trevally

Gnathanodon speciosus

Biology and environment

This trevally has a unique colouring, a brilliant yellow with vertical black bars. It usually travel in small shoals.

This species’ life style changes over time. The young fish exist symbiotically with jellyfish, living among their tentacles. The juveniles stay close to surface, keeping company with large predators.

This affords them protection, and they can also enjoy the bigger animals’ leftovers. When the adults start to lose their teeth, they drop further into the ocean’s depths, searching the sand for crustaceans and other invertebrates.

Although this species is accustomed to following sharks and other large predators, it is not a pilot fish.
The pilot fish, Naucrates ductor, sports a white colour with wider black bands.
